Homemade Solar Water Heaters

While I was researching some history of solar energy, I found this article from Mother Earth News, posted in the 1970’s. It describes a home project to build a solar water heater by a family who was building a home by themselves. I enjoyed the article, and found it written in a fairly simple style that many handy people could follow! And even though the article is almost three decades old, it could still provide a basic model for a do-it-yourself type person to follow in the twenty-first century.

It was interesting to read that the builder had researched the purchase of a solar water heater and found them very expensive, even in 21st century dollars! Perhaps demand and technology as lowered the cost quite a bit. You can get started on a home solar project for about $200 today, or sometimes, even less!
